They’ve recently completed their bi-annual survey based on the Recertification Monitoring Evaluation program conducted by the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (DIA). The results of the survey are an insufficiency free report. This means no deficiencies were reported.

    Mason Lund, an 11-year-old, began coming to the facility almost every day around June 1 and continued up until he started school again in August.

They celebrated the end of National Nurses Week, the beginning of National Nursing home week and their 40th anniversary!     New London Nursing and Rehab Center has received a five-star rating from US News and World Report ranking the care and rehab center as one of the top care facilities in the state. The ranking is based on information obtained by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and based on overall performances in health inspections, nurse staffing ratio and quality of care.

    New London Nursing and Rehab Center was one of 24 percent of the nursing facilities in Iowa to receive a five-star rating.

    (Eldora, IA – December 12, 2016)  Valley View Specialty Care in Eldora was named a “Best Nursing Home” by the U.S. News & World Report 2016-17 Nursing Home Finder report released last month. Nursing homes are eligible to receive this distinction if they score between a 4.5 and 5.0 on a 5.0 scale. According to the report, Valley View Specialty Care received a perfect 5.0 rating and is recognized as a “Top Rated Nursing Home.”  The report uses existing federal nursing home rating information and federally reported health care data to come up with their own rating system.

  • Terminally ill widow gets surprise gift from husband, 2 years after his death

    OSKALOOSA, Ia. — If a person’s life could fit inside a box, Glen W. Davis’ spirit resides in the small, beat-up Rexall first aid kit tin sitting on his wife’s bedside table.

    A surprise, the tin was discovered lovingly placed inside a secret, specially built nook, revealed when neighbor Carl Haffner took a sledgehammer to an old closet in the Davis’ house, which he purchased when the couple moved out. The worn canister held two pay stubs from Glen’s decades of work at a Pella window factory and his hunting and trapping license, renewed in 1992.

    The annual  survey, which is conducted over several days, covers over  500 quality, safety and performance issues such as medication management, proper skin care, assessment of resident’s needs, respect for residents rights and dignity, food service, environment and administration.     Jan Caruso joined the Care Initiatives Hospice volunteer team in Albia in December, 2014 after experiencing the great support and services offered by Hospice at the time of her husband’s passing.

    Pam Galbraith of Ravenwood Specialty Care in Waterloo received Care Initiatives Outstanding Social Services Coordinator for 2015. She has been with Ravenwood for 33 years.

    Rory Wedgwood of Southridge Specialty Care in Marshalltown received Care Initiatives Outstanding Maintenance Employee of 2015.

    Wedgwood has been a valuable asset to the staff and residents since 2002. “When a repair order comes in, it’s like Rory can read our minds and has it fixed before we know it,” says Administrator Murt Steffen. “He has been out on the rooftop in subzero weather. Come in from his family Thanksgiving dinner to correct a problem. He even cooks special meals and brings them in for residents who don’t have family to take them out.”

  • Avoca resident honored as Dietary Employee of the Year

    Lisa Peterson of Avoca Specialty Care received Care Initiatives Outstanding Dietary Employee Award for 2015. Peterson joined the staff in 1990 and has been cooking and baking for residents for the past 25 years.

    “Lisa has been a very dedicated, hard-working cook who takes pride in adding her own special touch in the meals she creates for residents,” says Dietary Services Manager Patty Lippold. “She is very well organized and has a great work ethic.

    Staff also benefit from her culinary skill. Peterson often bakes at home and brings her creations in for everyone to try.

    Connie Elswick of Oakwood Specialty Care in Albia received Care Initiatives Outstanding CNA Award for 2015. Elswick has been serving as a certified aide/med aide/restorative aide for almost 20 years.

    “Connie will stop at nothing to get her residents what they need to thrive,” says Administrator Rachel Gooden. “She is so passionate for her residents, she even wrote her local congressman regarding some of the issues residents and veterans have with their insurance and how the issues with government programs affect long term care residents.”

    Kim Van Der Sloot of Sibley Specialty Care received Care Initiatives Outstanding Business Office Manager Award for 2015. Van Der Sloot joined the staff as a nurse aide in 2003, with the goal of getting an associate’s degree. When she accomplished that, she applied for the business office manager position and has been in that position since 2008.

    “She takes great pride in our accounts receivables, consistently one of the lowest in Care Initiatives.  Kim works hard to keep our financial house in order,” says Administrator Jessica McDyer.
