    For Ray Taylor of Ottumwa, it was horses that brought out the best in him as a kid, even in the toughest of times. On Tuesday, July 31, he was able to regain that sensation one more time with help from staff of Care Initiatives Hospice in partnership with Victory Ranch.

    “Growing up, Ray had a pretty tumultuous childhood,” said Social Worker Jacque Heiter, a member of the Care Initiatives Hospice staff who has been working to make his final wish a reality.

  • Sibley Specialty Care Passes State Survey with Zero Deficiencies

    Sibley Specialty Care is pleased to announce it has received a “Deficiency Free” result on its annual survey in July 2018 by the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals. There are 412 nursing facilities in Iowa. Generally, only 5 percent are found to be deficiency-free. Sibley Specialty Care also recently received the AHCA Silver – Achievement in Quality Award and was named a “Best Nursing Home” by US News & World Report.

    La Porte City Specialty Care Administrator Pamela Tallman has won the American College of Health Care Administrators (ACHCA) 2018 Eli Pick Facility Leadership Award. This is the second time she has received the designation. The leadership award was celebrated at ACHCA’s 52nd Annual Convocation and Exposition in
    Orlando, Florida on Tuesday, April 24.

    Fewer than 11% of facilities nationwide qualify. This year, 1,717 facilities met the selection criteria. Three hundred and fifty‐one administrators in 45 states were awarded the facility leadership award nationally.

    WATERLOO—Today a signing ceremony formally committed Care Initiatives to a sponsorship deal with the Waterloo Career Center housed in Central Middle School. Care Initiatives facilities employ over 420 people in Black Hawk County and over 3,000 people in the state of Iowa. They operate 44 facilities in Iowa alone and a hospice service serving 66 of Iowa’s 99 counties, including right here in Black Hawk County.   • Des Moines Hospice staff go on dementia 'tour'

    On Oct. 31, the Des Moines staff held a retreat which included a "tour" through dementia. One group put on glasses that mimicked cataracts or macular degeneration, sensory plates in their shoes, earphones generating extra sound and gloves to imitate tactile function loss. The other group were caretakers. Together they were asked to perform a variety of tasks to demonstrate the challenges of living with dementia. At the end of the day, they also took some time to focus on self-care for the caretakers.

Eighteen staff members and volunteers listened to State Representative Joel Fry as he discussed “Caring for the Volunteer Spirit”.     OSKALOOSA, Ia. — If a person’s life could fit inside a box, Glen W. Davis’ spirit resides in the small, beat-up Rexall first aid kit tin sitting on his wife’s bedside table.

    A surprise, the tin was discovered lovingly placed inside a secret, specially built nook, revealed when neighbor Carl Haffner took a sledgehammer to an old closet in the Davis’ house, which he purchased when the couple moved out. The worn canister held two pay stubs from Glen’s decades of work at a Pella window factory and his hunting and trapping license, renewed in 1992.

    For more than 30 years, Lantern Park Specialty Care has partnered with Goodwill of the Heartland to assist in creating job opportunities for people with barriers to independence. For 26 of those years, Lois Hahn, supervisor of laundry and housekeeping at Lantern Park, has provided those opportunities and supervised dozens of adult workers of all ages as they developed their skill set.     For the sixth year in a row, Crestview Specialty Care received a “Deficiency Free” result on its annual survey in February by the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals.

    The annual  survey, which is conducted over several days, covers over  500 quality, safety and performance issues such as medication management, proper skin care, assessment of resident’s needs, respect for residents rights and dignity, food service, environment and administration. With the increase in regulations, achieving the distinction of a “deficiency-free” rating is very prestigious.

    Jan Caruso joined the Care Initiatives Hospice volunteer team in Albia in December, 2014 after experiencing the great support and services offered by Hospice at the time of her husband’s passing.

    “I enjoy spending time with people who have gained wisdom from many years,” she says. Jan is generous with her time often reading to patients, chatting with them or family and giving hugs freely. She embodies the true meaning of Hospice. Thank you, Jan!

    Pam Galbraith of Ravenwood Specialty Care in Waterloo received Care Initiatives Outstanding Social Services Coordinator for 2015. She has been with Ravenwood for 33 years.

    Administrator Lori Bellinger says that Galbraith is always putting others first. “Whether you are a resident, a family member, a community member, a health care provider or a team member, Pam will try everything in her power to get done what is needed,” Bellinger says.

  • Marshalltown resident honored as Outstanding Maintenance Employee of the Year

    Rory Wedgwood of Southridge Specialty Care in Marshalltown received Care Initiatives Outstanding Maintenance Employee of 2015.

    Wedgwood has been a valuable asset to the staff and residents since 2002. “When a repair order comes in, it’s like Rory can read our minds and has it fixed before we know it,” says Administrator Murt Steffen. “He has been out on the rooftop in subzero weather. Come in from his family Thanksgiving dinner to correct a problem. He even cooks special meals and brings them in for residents who don’t have family to take them out.”

  • Avoca resident honored as Dietary Employee of the Year

    Lisa Peterson of Avoca Specialty Care received Care Initiatives Outstanding Dietary Employee Award for 2015. Peterson joined the staff in 1990 and has been cooking and baking for residents for the past 25 years.

    “Lisa has been a very dedicated, hard-working cook who takes pride in adding her own special touch in the meals she creates for residents,” says Dietary Services Manager Patty Lippold. “She is very well organized and has a great work ethic.

    Staff also benefit from her culinary skill. Peterson often bakes at home and brings her creations in for everyone to try.

    Connie Elswick of Oakwood Specialty Care in Albia received Care Initiatives Outstanding CNA Award for 2015. Elswick has been serving as a certified aide/med aide/restorative aide for almost 20 years.

    “Connie will stop at nothing to get her residents what they need to thrive,” says Administrator Rachel Gooden. “She is so passionate for her residents, she even wrote her local congressman regarding some of the issues residents and veterans have with their insurance and how the issues with government programs affect long term care residents.”

  • Sibley resident honored as Outstanding Business Office Manager of the Year

    Kim Van Der Sloot of Sibley Specialty Care received Care Initiatives Outstanding Business Office Manager Award for 2015. Van Der Sloot joined the staff as a nurse aide in 2003, with the goal of getting an associate’s degree. When she accomplished that, she applied for the business office manager position and has been in that position since 2008.

    “She takes great pride in our accounts receivables, consistently one of the lowest in Care Initiatives.  Kim works hard to keep our financial house in order,” says Administrator Jessica McDyer.

    Saturday, July 11 was a very important day for Debbie McDermott’s brother-in-law. It was a day that Debbie knew she did not want to miss – her brother-in-law’s retirement party marking 42 years of service in the Air Force.
